Last week, Top Rank’s CEO Bob Arum – who co-promotes WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury – explained that he plans to speak with the World Boxing Council to push back Fury’s mandatory obligation to Dillian Whyte.
Whyte, who holds the WBC’s interim-title, is due a mandatory shot by February 2021.
The once-beaten British heavyweight has been the number one contender, under the WBC, since at least 2018.
Whyte erupted when he read Arum’s comments on the matter.
“Arum’s talking rubbish. If he represented me he’d be screaming that this is the biggest travesty in the history of boxing – nearly 1,000 days as No 1 without being given a shot whereas Tyson Fury barely scraped by the WBC No 31 ranked Otto Wallin in front of only 3,500 people and then got gifted my mandatory position without fighting an eliminator, never mind a final eliminator,” Whyte told Sky Sports.
But Frank Warren, the other co-promoter of Fury, agrees with Arum.
He says Fury will get in the ring with Deontay Wilder for their trilogy fight, likely near the end of the year. And after that, the next order of business is a unification showdown with WBO, WBA, IBF, IBO champion Anthony Joshua, which is being targeted to happen at some point in 2021.
If Joshua is indeed the first fight for Fury in 2021, then Whyte would have to wait until the second half of that year at very least.
“Dillian Whyte has been outspoken this week calling for his chance against Fury but unfortunately he is just going to have to wait. The whole sport is on hold thanks to the coronavirus so Fury is waiting, Joshua is waiting, Wilder is waiting and Pulev is waiting.,” Warren told Daily Star.
“Fury will get to him eventually but, for now, it will be Wilder and then Joshua.”
