Frank Warren, co-promoter for WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, explained that there is zero interest in facing Dillian Whyte on December 5 in the UK.
Whyte was scheduled to face Alexander Povetkin in a rematch on November 21. The fight was postponed on Tuesday, after it was revealed that Povetkin had tested positive for COVID-19.
Fury has yet to finalize his opponent, but Agit Kabayel is the frontrunner and he was issued a contract.
After Whyte’s contest fell out, his promoter Eddie Hearn had floated the idea of having his man face Fury on the December date.
In his last fight, back in August, Whyte was brutally knocked out by Povetkin in five rounds.
Coming into that fight, Whyte was the WBC’s mandatory challenger and held their interim-title.
Warren has never viewed Whyte as an option for Fury, but now even more so after Povetkin took over as the interim-champion.
The veteran promoter has advised Whyte to go fight Filip Hrgovic (11-0) – a 2016 Olympic bronze medal winner who is co-promoted by Hearn.
“Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Dillian Whyte get absolutely poleaxed in his last fight? At that time, he was the mandatory challenger to Tyson, he kept banging on about it, they were going to sue everybody. Then stupidly, they put him in with Povetkin and he poleaxed him,” Warren told Talk Sport.
“That’s it, he’s lost his chance. We don’t need him. For Tyson, we’re working on Kabayel, if not we’ll be looking to do something else but it definitely won’t be against Dillian Whyte. There’s no gain in it. What is in it for us?
“They’ve got a fighter there – I can’t remember his name now – they have this European fighter who’s gonna be ‘the next best thing since sliced bread.’ They kept trying to steer him towards Daniel Dubois. Put him in with Dillian Whyte, they’ve got them in the same camp, they can make that fight. They were saying he’s the next big thing, let’s see if he is, put him in with Dillian Whyte.”
