Paris Saint-Germain received disappointing news on Monday as Kylian Mbappe informed them that he will not be extending his contract until 2025.

This decision raises concerns about the possibility of him leaving the club this summer, following in the footsteps of Lionel Messi.

Mbappe, the 24-year-old French striker, currently has a contract that expires at the end of the upcoming season, with an option for another year. If he doesn’t sign an extension, PSG risks losing him for free next year, which may prompt them to consider selling him during this transfer window to secure a substantial transfer fee for one of the world’s best players.

The announcement of Mbappe’s decision, revealed in a letter to the club and reported by French sports daily L’Equipe, comes as another blow to PSG after the departure of Messi to Inter Miami. The original deadline for Mbappe to make a decision was July 31, 2023.

This development comes just over a year after Mbappe surprised many by snubbing Real Madrid and extending his contract with PSG. Real Madrid is expected to be among the top contenders if he becomes available again.

Mbappe’s entourage has yet to respond to inquiries about his decision.

Losing Mbappe for free at the end of his current contract in the summer of 2024 would be disastrous for PSG. In addition to the void it would create in the team, the club would miss out on significant transfer earnings.

The future of Brazilian star striker Neymar, who is under contract until 2025, also appears uncertain, adding to the anticipation of a summer filled with changes in the French capital.

Growing doubts about Mbappe’s future have been mounting. In a recent statement, he hinted at a potential departure in 2024 while affirming his commitment to PSG for the upcoming season.

The announcement of Mbappe’s intentions to PSG adds to the frustrations faced by the club’s Qatari owners, who had a challenging season both on and off the pitch, despite winning the French title. PSG is currently searching for a new coach following Christophe Galtier’s departure.

Neymar’s fitness has also been a persistent concern, as he has missed numerous games due to injuries or suspensions since his record-breaking transfer from Barcelona in 2017.
