The family of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has decided to suspend the services of his two legal counsels.
This information was shared by Kanu’s younger brother, Kanunta Kanu, in a tweet on Thursday. The lawyers in question are Prof Mike Ozekhome SAN and Bar. Ifeanyi Ejiofor.
According to Kanunta, the family’s decision was prompted by the lawyers’ inability to meet with their client, who is currently being held at the Department of State Services (DSS) Headquarters in Abuja. Additionally, the lawyers are accused of preventing medical doctors from examining Nnamdi Kanu while he is in DSS custody.
Kanunta stated that after Nnamdi Kanu’s court appearance on May 11, 2023, Prof Mike Ozekhome SAN refused to visit him at the DSS headquarters in Abuja, despite several messages from Kanu requesting to see him. Furthermore, the lawyers were informed on June 2 about the scheduled medical examination for Kanu on June 5, but they allegedly obstructed the process. Kanu had asked them to inform his family to make the necessary arrangements.
Due to these reasons and others, Prof Mike Ozekhome SAN and Bar. Ifeanyi Ejiofor has been dismissed as Nnamdi Kanu’s counsel. The Kanu family expressed gratitude for their previous efforts and requested the lawyers to promptly hand over any relevant legal documents.
The decision to suspend the legal counsel signifies a change in the legal representation for Nnamdi Kanu, and it remains to be seen how this development will impact his ongoing legal proceedings.
