Nigeria and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is trending around the world after his Italian Serie A club posted a video mocking last season’s league’s top scorer for missing a penalty in a game vs. Bologna.
Osimhen helped Napoli win the Scudetto for the first time in 33 years. However, the penalty miss against Bologna, and his reaction after being substituted did not go well with the club’s social media handler.
The Super Eagles striker was substituted by his manager Rudi Garcia in the 79th minute of the game and leaving the pitch he showed his frustration with the manager’s decision, showing him two fingers indicating the coach probably needed two strikers in.
The striker has however apologized to his teammates and manager, for his reaction. According to Italian Journalist, Fabrizio Romano, Osimhen exploded in the locker room that he reacted this way because he wanted to win.
Fabrizio reports, “Positive, strong message to the team as leader once again. His message to the Napoli squad today was positive — and it was to react after the draw. Osimhen always wants to win games — that’s why he spoke to Garcia after being subbed off vs. Bologna”, he said.
Despite the amicable resolution, a mockery video of the striker calling the referee for a penalty and then missing it has surfaced online. Watch the video below:
Osimhen could take legal action against Napoli
Victor Osimhen could take legal action against Napoli, according to his agent Roberto Calenda.
Roberto’s statement reads:
“What happened today on Napoli’s official profile on the TikTok platform is not acceptable. A video mocking Victor was first made public and then, but now belatedly, deleted”.
“A serious fact that causes very serious damage to the player and adds to the treatment that the boy is suffering in the last period between media trials and fake news”.
“We reserve the right to take legal action and any useful initiative to protect Victor”.
Player called up by Rudi Garcia
Victor Osimhen has been regularly called up by Napoli manager Rudi Garcia for their next game vs. Udinese.
And the Nigerian scored his side’s second goal in a 4-1 win against Udinese but didn’t celebrate the goal.
Coach Rudi Garcia said after the match:
“I can assure you that Victor loves this jersey,” Garcia said. “He is invested 100% in our project.
“I have a very good relationship with Victor. I am happy for him because he scored tonight. After the match in Bologna, we were all frustrated, angry, Victor in particular, because he missed the penalty.
“On the sporting aspect and on other levels, especially on TikTok, there have been a lot of things to manage in recent days.”
